The Hyundai Tucson has documented theft exposure in Quebec: Équité Association’s 2024 provincial ranking places it seventh by number of thefts. That finding supports taking protection seriously, but it does not establish a Canada-wide high-risk label or the likelihood that your particular Tucson will be stolen. Canadian owners should also distinguish their vehicle’s security equipment from the U.S. Hyundai theft headlines. A useful routine combines secure keys, confirmed door locking and a visible physical layer, with the details matched to your model year.
What the Canadian Tucson theft evidence shows
In its 2024 Quebec ranking by number of thefts, Équité lists 158 Hyundai Tucson thefts, 70,299 insured Tucsons and a published theft frequency of 0.23%. The ranking identifies 2020 as the most often stolen model year. The 158 thefts and 0.23% frequency describe the Tucson model grouping in that Quebec dataset; they are not separate figures for 2020 Tucsons.
A count ranking and an individual risk estimate answer different questions. Seventh place describes how many thefts were recorded relative to the other models on that list. The frequency uses the insured vehicles in Équité’s dataset as its denominator. Neither measure provides a forecast for one owner’s postcode, parking arrangements or vehicle.
The Tucson does not appear in the same report’s national top ten by theft count. That absence proves neither safety nor elevated risk across Canada. Équité’s November 18, 2025 release concerns thefts during 2024. These are historical observations, not 2026 Tucson theft figures. Owners elsewhere in Canada should treat the Quebec finding as regional evidence and discuss their exact vehicle and location with their insurer.
Why U.S. Hyundai theft headlines need Canadian context
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s February 2023 Hyundai and Kia theft campaign concerned vehicles that lacked an immobilizer. It is not a Canadian Tucson theft study and does not establish that Canadian-market Tucsons have the same equipment gap.
Transport Canada’s immobilizer background explains that mandatory compliance took effect on September 1, 2007 for prescribed vehicle classes, including passenger cars and relevant light SUVs. An armed immobilizer prevents activation of a vehicle control unit until coded authorization is provided. Canadian-market vehicles covered by those requirements therefore have a different regulatory starting point from the immobilizer-less U.S. examples.
Factory theft protection remains one layer. It does not mean a Tucson cannot be stolen or broken into. For an older vehicle or a used import, confirm its market of origin and fitted equipment with the model-year manual or a Hyundai dealer. A registration year or an online headline alone cannot answer those questions.
Match key security to your Tucson’s features
Hyundai Canada’s 2026 Tucson page describes proximity keyless front-door entry with push-button ignition and an available Digital Key. This confirms that some current Canadian Tucsons have access credentials beyond a traditional ignition key. It does not establish the equipment on every older Tucson or every trim.
Account for the main key, spare keys and any phone used for vehicle access. When buying a used Tucson, ask the dealer to explain the credentials associated with that vehicle and the appropriate way to manage them. Use the lock confirmation described in your model-year manual, especially when a proximity key is nearby.
These features also do not prove a particular electronic theft method applies to your Tucson. The Quebec ranking identifies theft exposure without identifying the method used in each theft. Prevention choices should follow confirmed equipment and local advice, rather than assumptions about every vehicle carrying the Hyundai badge.
Build a practical protection routine
In its February 2026 prevention guidance, British Columbia’s RCMP and IMPACT recommend locking the vehicle, taking the keys, removing visible valuables, parking in well-lit areas and using additional anti-theft devices such as steering wheel locks. Those are general prevention measures, not a Tucson-specific effectiveness estimate.
- At home: secure all vehicle keys and spares, and choose a visible, well-lit parking position where practical.
- When leaving the Tucson: confirm it is locked, take the access credentials with you and remove visible bags or electronics.
- During a short stop: avoid leaving the vehicle running unattended, even when you expect to return quickly.
- When reviewing insurance: ask about requirements for your exact year, trim and location before choosing additional protection.
Add a visible physical layer—and measure first
At Disklok Canada, we recommend a visible physical layer alongside factory security and careful key handling. The Disklok Gold Edition encloses the steering wheel and provides a prominent physical barrier. It complements the Tucson’s electronic systems; it does not block electronic access or guarantee theft prevention.
Select the size from the actual wheel, not the Tucson model name. Our sizing guide instructs owners to measure across the centre, from outside edge to outside edge. It lists Small for 35–38.9 cm and Medium for 39–41.5 cm. If your measurement falls between the listed ranges, outside them or leaves fit uncertain, contact us before ordering.
For Tucson owners, the useful conclusion is specific: Quebec’s 2024 data warrants attention, Canadian security equipment needs its own context, and consistent protection should suit the vehicle you actually drive.
