Ford Escape Theft in Canada: Evidence and Protection

The Ford Escape deserves a sensible theft-prevention routine, but the Canadian evidence reviewed here does not establish it as a high-risk model. It is absent from Équité Association’s national top-ten ranking by number of thefts for 2024, released in November 2025. That list does not provide an Escape-specific theft rate or prove that an Escape is safe from theft. For owners, the useful next step is to understand the security equipment on their particular vehicle, lock it deliberately after parking, secure every key, and consider a visible physical layer. Read Équité’s release and national ranking for 2024.

What the Canadian evidence tells Escape owners

Équité’s national list ranks vehicles by the number stolen during the observation year. Theft counts and theft frequency answer different questions: one describes how many vehicles were stolen, while the other relates thefts to the insured vehicle population. An Escape’s absence from that top-ten count list is not enough to calculate an owner’s likelihood of a claim.

The ranking includes the Ford F150 Series, but that is a different vehicle. Its results cannot be transferred to the Escape simply because both carry a Ford badge. The sources reviewed for this guide do not establish a current Canadian Escape theft frequency, a ranking of its most vulnerable model years, or a measured difference between Escape powertrains. We therefore recommend protection based on your vehicle’s actual equipment and parking circumstances, without assigning an unsupported risk label.

Understand your Escape’s factory security

The 2021 Escape owner’s manual for Canada and the United States provides useful examples. These apply to that manual; check your own model year and equipment.

  • Starting protection: the passive anti-theft system is designed to prevent starting with an incorrectly coded key. It arms when the ignition is switched off.
  • Alarm arming: the manual describes the alarm being ready to arm without a key in the vehicle, then locking with the remote control to arm it. Follow your equipment’s instructions.
  • Autolock: this feature locks doors under driving conditions. It does not confirm that the Escape is secured after everyone has got out; deliberately lock after parking.

Have security faults checked. Ask a Ford dealer about uncertain equipment: the manual’s descriptions of available sensors do not establish that every Escape has them.

Build a routine for every parking stop

In its February 2026 prevention guidance, British Columbia’s RCMP and Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team recommend locking the vehicle, taking the keys, removing visible valuables, choosing well-lit parking, and using anti-theft devices such as steering-wheel locks. This is general prevention advice, rather than evidence of an Escape-specific theft trend. See the RCMP’s vehicle-protection guidance.

  1. Finish the parking process. Switch off, close the windows and doors, take your key, and deliberately lock the Escape using the appropriate control. Check that it has locked before walking away.
  2. Account for every key. Include the spare in your household’s storage routine. Ford’s manual advises taking keys with you and locking the doors; do not leave a usable key in the vehicle.
  3. Make the parking space work for you. Choose a visible, well-lit area when available, and remove bags and electronics from view. Do not leave the vehicle running unattended.
  4. Use the added protection consistently. A steering-wheel lock only becomes part of the routine when you fit it after parking. Keep its key with you and remove the device fully before driving.

Adding a full-cover lock: measure your own wheel

At Disklok Canada, we recommend a visible physical layer alongside the Escape’s factory security and good key habits. The Disklok Gold Edition covers the entire steering wheel and uses a spinning design intended to resist steering-wheel attacks. It is an additional physical deterrent; no lock guarantees that a vehicle will never be stolen.

Choose the size by measuring your actual Escape’s steering wheel, rather than ordering from the model name alone. Our sizing guide explains measuring across the centre, from outside edge to outside edge. Compare that measurement with the published ranges before selecting a size. If the measurement falls outside a clear range or fit remains uncertain, contact us before ordering.
