Equinox, Terrain & Torrent Theft Protection in Canada

The Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain and Pontiac Torrent appear together in Équité Association’s Alberta theft data for 2024. The combined series ranked ninth by number of thefts in that province. That is a reason to take protection seriously, but it does not establish high theft risk for every model, generation or Canadian location. Owners should combine working factory security with secure key storage, careful parking and a visible physical deterrent. The useful starting point is the actual Alberta report, followed by the security instructions for your particular vehicle.

What the Alberta theft figures show

Équité’s Alberta table records 101 thefts among 45,108 insured vehicles in the combined series, with a reported theft frequency of 0.22%. The ranking measures theft volume; the frequency relates thefts to the insured population.

The most often stolen model year was 2017. That does not make the group’s count or rate a 2017-only result, or a separate result for each nameplate. These are combined Alberta figures for 2024.

Équité released its annual list on November 18, 2025, reporting the previous year’s thefts. Those publication and observation dates matter: this is historical evidence, not a measurement of today’s conditions. The dated annual release also explains that theft patterns differ by region. For an owner elsewhere in Canada, the Alberta placement is regional context; it cannot supply a local probability of theft or an individual insurance assessment.

Check the security system on your exact vehicle

A shared statistical row does not establish identical security equipment. Two manufacturer examples show why the model year and actual controls deserve attention.

For the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox, the owner’s manual describes a transponder-key immobilizer that arms automatically when the key is removed from the ignition. The alarm is a separate system: the manual says locking the doors with the key does not arm it. Owners should follow the documented remote-locking procedure and check the alarm indicator. If the security light stays on and the engine will not start, the manual directs owners towards diagnosis and service. These details apply to the documented 2017 Equinox; they should not be transferred automatically to every Terrain or Torrent. See Chevrolet’s 2017 Equinox manual, Vehicle Security and Immobilizer Operation, pages 36–38.

The 2020 GMC Terrain manual describes Keyless Access, which allows door and liftgate operation while the transmitter remains in a pocket or bag. It also describes configurable passive locking and a passive immobilizer that requires a correctly matched transmitter. Check your vehicle’s settings and confirm that it has locked when you leave. These are examples from the 2020 Terrain manual, pages 10–11 and 28–29, not a claim that every vehicle in the family has proximity entry.

For a Pontiac Torrent or another Equinox or Terrain model year, use its own manual or ask a GM dealer to identify the fitted system. A remote with lock buttons alone is insufficient evidence that a vehicle has passive proximity access. Build your routine around the equipment actually present.

Build a practical parking and key routine

York Regional Police’s prevention guidance recommends locking the vehicle, keeping valuables out, using a closed and locked garage where available, and adding a visible steering-wheel lock. It also identifies key-fob signal-blocking storage and recovery tracking as protection options.

  • Take the operating key or transmitter and spare keys with you. Keep them secure indoors, away from entry points.
  • Where your vehicle has proximity access, consider signal-blocking storage for the fobs as an additional precaution.
  • Close the windows, lock the vehicle and follow its alarm-arming instructions. Remove visible valuables before walking away.
  • Use a locked garage when possible. If you park outside regularly, consider cameras and ask about a compatible recovery tracker.

At Disklok Canada, we recommend a visible physical layer alongside those habits. The Disklok Gold Edition encloses the steering wheel and is designed to spin under attack, adding a physical barrier and a conspicuous deterrent to a parked vehicle. It complements factory electronic security. It cannot guarantee that a vehicle will remain untouched or replace secure key storage and consistent locking.

Measure your Equinox, Terrain or Torrent before ordering

Choose a Disklok size from the steering wheel in your vehicle, rather than from the grouped model name. Our current sizing guide instructs owners to measure across the centre, outside edge to outside edge. It lists Small for diameters of 35–38.9 cm and Medium for 39–41.5 cm.

Measure the actual wheel before ordering, including any fitted cover. If the result falls between published ranges, outside them, or leaves you uncertain, contact Disklok Canada for help. The Alberta theft table is useful evidence about a vehicle family; it is not a fit chart for your individual SUV.
